Physiotherapy Modalities Explained

Physiotherapy is not a medical term that a lot of people are familiar with. At Atlantic Coast Chiropractic in Wilmington, DE, our lead chiropractor, Dr. Anthony Giacalone, specializes in nine physiotherapy modalities to provide a total wellness system to everyone he and his staff helps. We’ll explain these nine modalities briefly, so you’ll know what to expect on your next visit.

Ultrasound

Normally used to generate live images of a baby in utero, ultrasound can also be used to visualize other internal parts of the body in a way that is non-invasive and safe. In some cases, it has even been shown to improve circulation.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

EMS is a means of electrically stimulating muscles that are damaged or weakened by illness or injury. It is an aid for physical therapy.

Graston Technique

This form of manual therapy is used for muscle mobilization and to break up scar tissue using special non-invasive tools.

Compression Therapy

This helps promote dynamic recovery. Compression therapy can improve circulation, reduce the risk of blood clots, and aid in healing ulcers.

Mechanical Traction

A chiropractic technique that involves the use of specialized tables to release pressure in the spinal column or other joints to increase blood flow and promote healing.

Cryotherapy

This method of pain treatment is used to treat specific areas of pain and can even treat several tissue lesions using very low temperatures.

Moist Heat Therapy

Moist heat therapy is a method of controlling pain, relaxing muscles, and improving circulation to a specific area or a portion of the body. Moisture is utilized to reduce shock and to prevent the therapy from drying the skin.

Low-Level Laser/Infrared Therapy

This is designed to help muscle tissue, skin, and other parts of the body to heal. This therapy has been shown to increase circulation to promote the natural healing process in a targeted area.

Vibration Therapy

This chiropractic treatment is a great way to improve circulation to a specific area, increase mobility and flexibility, and even to reduce pain in many instances.
